The john deere 4020 was a farm tractor model manufactured by john deere from 1964 to 1972. It changed the nearly identical 4010 that was introduced with the deere new technology series in 1960 and provided some of the improvements over the previous model along with more horsepower, heavier rear axles, and a differential lock. The john deere 4020 was produced with 3 engine alternatives: diesel, gasoline and lpg.

The john deere 4020 diesel has a six-cylinder engine tested at 84 traction horsepower and ninety-one power take-off. John deere’s syncro range transmission & # 8217 with 8 forward speeds and two speeds of recoil became widespread, a power shift transmission shifted into non-mandatory. Different options include dual rear wheels and a closed cab with heating and air conditioning. The 4020 is considerable for its incredible recognition; more than 184,000 devices had been built, it became the most popular tractor of its time.

Using the identical motor because the JD 4020, however, being nearly a thousand pounds lighter, the 4000 must, consistent with deere, within the same amount of time, pull a 4-sided plow fast enough to cover the same surface as a JD 4020 pulling a five-sided plow. The john deere 4000 also became an economical tractor, offering the same power as the 4020 with fewer capacities and smaller rear axles at a lower rate. But most customers opted for the popular 4020 and most of the 7,987 4000 tractors have been built.

While John Deere delivered its era-ii tractors in 1972, the 4020 switched to a hundred horsepower 4230.

Hydraulics on the John Deere 4020. Some minor changes were made to the 4020 during production and to other New Generation series tractors. Resulting in the included upgrade to move the hydraulic levers on the left side of the dash to the right of the operator.

A narrower oval muffler provides better visibility and a longer gear lever.

The John Deere 4020 tractor was introduced in 1969 and was based on the 4020. It was the most powerful and heaviest tractor of its day.

The 4020 covers the surface of a 5-depth plow. It was an inexpensive tractor and provided great power with fewer features and smaller rear axles at a lower price which is why it was the most popular tractor at the time.

John Deere 4020 Tractor

  • I’m going to summarize the chain of events so far:
  • 1) The 4020 in question is a front console, manual PTO.
  • 2) It had been making a groaning noise with the PTO running for a while, apparently coming from the pile of gears between the bell housing and the transmission.
  • 3) My brother-in-law was packing, he heard a loud bang and the tractor stopped. He disengaged the PTO and the tractor worked fine; we use it in the wrap for the rest of the first cut.
  • 4) I pulled out the cab and split the tractor at the break between the clutch bell / housing and transmission. Lots of needle bearings vomited and all three gears were missing some teeth.
  • 5) While splitting I pulled out the 540 axle and removed the boom at the rear of the tractor. I spun the PTO driveshaft in the split and had my brother-in-law looking at the rear. He said everything was spinning smoothly.
  • 6) I put 3 new gears, needle bearings, thrust washers, etc. I turned everything by hand and it looked very smooth.
  • 7) The halves were put together, the tractor was started, idled, and the PTO carefully engaged.
  • 8) The tractor stopped.
  • Any ideas?

You say you divided it into the hood and clutch case? To get to the gears of the PTO you have to divide it below the floor pan, just behind the dash. My 4010’s spike split, which we had to do a couple of winters ago as the axle neck pin broke and got stuck between the 540 and 1000 PTO. Hope this helps. Mine was also getting stuck because it was in the middle. Maybe someone can convert the images for me, can’t get them to rotate

I can’t argue with you, but I think split wise the 4020 is the same as the 4010 to get to the PTO gears, and they have to split where it shows not on the bell housing. It’s been a long time since I’ve done anything on a 4020. I have the photos from the 4010, so let’s see if that helps. I know when the gland bolt broke on mine it got stuck in the middle and the tractor stalled. I don’t have a 4020 around here and I don’t have a neighbor I can jog my memory with. All I can help now.

Did you inspect the top gear that is attached to the shaft that goes to the clutch? There could be some metal stuck in the teeth and getting stuck. That gear wouldn’t have been turning while the tractor was split. He also said he was turning by hand while removing the rear bearing shank. Perhaps the large gear just behind the quill could be damaged.
