- I’m going to summarize the chain of events so far:
- 1) The 4020 in question is a front console, manual PTO.
- 2) It had been making a groaning noise with the PTO running for a while, apparently coming from the pile of gears between the bell housing and the transmission.
- 3) My brother-in-law was packing, he heard a loud bang and the tractor stopped. He disengaged the PTO and the tractor worked fine; we use it in the wrap for the rest of the first cut.
- 4) I pulled out the cab and split the tractor at the break between the clutch bell / housing and transmission. Lots of needle bearings vomited and all three gears were missing some teeth.
- 5) While splitting I pulled out the 540 axle and removed the boom at the rear of the tractor. I spun the PTO driveshaft in the split and had my brother-in-law looking at the rear. He said everything was spinning smoothly.
- 6) I put 3 new gears, needle bearings, thrust washers, etc. I turned everything by hand and it looked very smooth.
- 7) The halves were put together, the tractor was started, idled, and the PTO carefully engaged.
- 8) The tractor stopped.

You say you divided it into the hood and clutch case? To get to the gears of the PTO you have to divide it below the floor pan, just behind the dash. My 4010’s spike split, which we had to do a couple of winters ago as the axle neck pin broke and got stuck between the 540 and 1000 PTO. Hope this helps. Mine was also getting stuck because it was in the middle. Maybe someone can convert the images for me, can’t get them to rotate
I can’t argue with you, but I think split wise the 4020 is the same as the 4010 to get to the PTO gears, and they have to split where it shows not on the bell housing. It’s been a long time since I’ve done anything on a 4020. I have the photos from the 4010, so let’s see if that helps. I know when the gland bolt broke on mine it got stuck in the middle and the tractor stalled. I don’t have a 4020 around here and I don’t have a neighbor I can jog my memory with. All I can help now.
Did you inspect the top gear that is attached to the shaft that goes to the clutch? There could be some metal stuck in the teeth and getting stuck. That gear wouldn’t have been turning while the tractor was split. He also said he was turning by hand while removing the rear bearing shank. Perhaps the large gear just behind the quill could be damaged.
